One of the Itanium Solutions Alliance's founding goals was to provide the most extensive system, applications, and support network in the industry. Founders Bull, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens, Hitachi, HP, Intel, NEC, SGI, and Unisys, along with Charter Members BEA, Microsoft, Novell, Oracle, SAP, SAS, and Sybase, set the tone and are the reason why Itanium-based solutions continue to evolve at such a rapid rate. The companies often have competing interests, but they work together, to create a stronger, sustainable ecosystem for Itanium-based servers which, in the long run, benefits customers by providing more choices from a strong set of offerings.
A recent press release sent some shockwaves through the IT user community. Now, thanks to the collaboration and innovation of mission-critical computing giants NEC, Intel and Microsoft, the first servers with on-the-fly, dynamic partitioning capability was introduced: the NEC Express5800/1320Xf.
To paraphrase Mark Twain: The rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated. Not only is Itanium still here, it's going strong and poised for significant advancements with the launch of the next-generation processor, Tukwila, due out in late 2008. IDC has described Itanium as the fastest growing server platform in the world based on their research! All of this helps the Itanium Solutions Alliance, which has been making great progress in many areas including membership, application support, and strong relationships with partners such as Microsoft.
